Preparing for your spa cure

Watch video

In the heart of the Belledonne massif, just 40 km from Grenoble, Allevard-les-Bains welcomes you every year from the end of March to the end of October for a spa treatment in an exceptional natural setting. Specialising in rheumatology, fibromyalgia and the respiratory tract, the resort offers recognised treatments, an unspoilt environment and an authentic spa village atmosphere.

Here’s everything you need to know to organise your stay with peace of mind, from your doctor’s prescription to your accommodation.

A spa with a unique character

Set in the Bréda valley, between the forests and peaks of the Belledonne mountains, Allevard-les-Bains is much more than just a spa resort: it’s a spa village on a human scale, where spa-goers return year after year to find a welcoming atmosphere and a calmer pace of life.

Its sulphur waters, among the richest in Europe in their category, are particularly effective in relieving joint pain, supporting fibromyalgia and treating respiratory tract ailments. A reputation built on decades of spa expertise, in an Alpine setting that itself invites healing.

The season runs from the end of March to the end of October. From the very first days, the valley slowly wakes up: hikers take to the trails again, the lively market regains its colour, and spa-goers enjoy the unspoilt atmosphere before the summer rush.

Our experience

Complete your stay

The spa treatment usually takes up the morning. The rest of the day opens out onto a generous territory, between mountains and valleys, for moments that are as varied as they are rejuvenating.

From Allevard, hikers have direct access to the trails of the Belledonne massif, with its waterfalls, high-altitude lakes and panoramic views of the Alps. For a more leisurely stroll, the spa park and narrow streets of the spa village offer the ideal setting between treatments.

Culture lovers will love the Musée d’Allevard, the Musée des Forges et Moulins de Pinsot, or a visit to nearby Fort Barraux. The lively and colourful local market is a great opportunity to discover the produce of the Isère region: cheeses, cold meats and seasonal vegetables. And in the evenings, the Casino d’Allevard and open-air shows set the pace for the season.

Our advice

Preparing for your cure

You need to prepare for a spa cure a few weeks in advance, especially if it is a subsidised cure. Here are the key steps to avoid unpleasant surprises.

  1. Start with your doctor. A doctor’s prescription is essential for a spa treatment covered by the social security system. Your general practitioner or a specialist (rheumatologist, ENT specialist, etc.) will draw up the request and determine your therapeutic orientation.
  2. Send your application to your CPAM. It may take several weeks to process. As soon as you have received approval, you will receive 2 or 3 sheets of paper: the cover for the spa doctor, the cover for the treatment and, if applicable, a request for cover of transport costs.
  3. Book your accommodation as soon as possible. Accommodation close to the thermal baths, particularly flats in rented weeks, sell out quickly at the start of the season. Plan ahead for at least 2 or 3 months.
  4. Pack your essentials. Swimming costume, bathrobe, comfortable shoes for walks between sessions, and something to keep you busy in the afternoons. The cure requires you to accept that you need to slow down – and that’s often where the real benefits begin.
